The road and its trucks

Designated truck route

The Turnpike, Route 1 and Route 130 are the designated truck routes through the Exit 8A area. The NJTPA freight study says Route 130 carries “significant truck volumes” to Interchange 8A and recommends routing trucks by Route 130 rather than by CR 619 (Applegarth Road) and the roads east of the Turnpike.

National Network

Parts of Route 130 are on the National Network, the system of roads that 102-inch-wide trucks and double-trailer combinations must stay on, leaving only for food, fuel, rest, repairs or a terminal by the direct route.

Heaviest truck volume

Route 130 between CR 522 (Ridge Road) and Fresh Ponds Road was one of the three highest truck-volume locations the study counted, with the two Exit 8A ramps.

Warehouses

Cranbury “is host to many warehouses along Route 130” and the roads to the Turnpike. The county study counted 15 warehouses planned, pending or approved around 8A in 2020–2022, adding more than 8 million square feet.

Recent crashes on Route 130

Crashes are described by date, road, town and vehicle type only. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

Of the 115 reportable truck and bus crashes on Route 130 in 2021–2025, 5 were fatal and 57 involved an injury (FMCSA crash file). The federal count includes a school-bus crash on January 31, 2024, at Stults Road in South Brunswick, in which a car turning left struck a school bus and three people in the car were killed. That is a bus case, not a truck case, and it is covered on the bus page.

Fatal crashes involving a large truck on Route 130, 2019–2024 (NHTSA FARS; 2024 preliminary):

  • December 10, 2019, late afternoon, North Brunswick: a same-direction sideswipe involving a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles on a lit section after dark. One person in another vehicle died.
  • April 9, 2021, morning, at Adams Lane, North Brunswick: a same-direction sideswipe involving a step van and three other vehicles. One person in another vehicle died.
  • September 24, 2021, dusk, at Deans Rhode Hall Road, South Brunswick: a rear-end collision with a tractor-trailer. One person in the other vehicle died.
  • June 28, 2022, 11:50 p.m., North Brunswick: a rear-end collision involving a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles. One person in another vehicle died.

Three of the four were same-direction crashes, sideswipes or rear-ends, which is the pattern of a multi-lane highway where trucks are merging from warehouse gates and signals. All four people who died were in other vehicles.

What to check in the report

Boxes 50–52 name the responsible carrier and its USDOT number; Box 114 gives the cargo body type; Box 145 is the narrative and says whether photos were taken. A wrong carrier can be fixed with a change report.

NJTR-1 Crash Report Manual, 2017

What's hard to do alone

  • Warehouse-gate turns involve more than the driver. A truck pulling out of a distribution center onto Route 130 may have been dispatched, loaded and released by a yard that is not the carrier. The yard's gate log, loading records and dispatch time sit with the warehouse, and the warehouse is under no duty to keep them for you.
  • The door name is not the defendant. The NJTR-1 manual itself warns officers that the number painted on the door “may not be that of the carrier responsible for the vehicle/load.” Statewide, leasing-company names show up in crash records because officers wrote the owner, not the carrier.
  • State-highway cameras and signals. Route 130 is NJDOT's road. Camera video must be requested electronically and received within seven calendar days, at $100 per camera for the first three hours.
  • The carrier's own clocks. Electronic logs are kept six months; driver inspection reports three months.

“If you are dealing with injuries after a blind-spot collision, the legal process can feel overwhelming, especially when trucking companies and insurers move quickly to limit your claim.”
