Why the trucks are here

The NJTPA freight study of southern Middlesex found that “the highest share of trucks was found at Interchange 8A.” Fifteen warehouses were planned, pending or approved around it in 2020–2022.

Recent crashes on this stretch

Crashes are described by date, road, town and vehicle type only. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

Reportable truck and bus crashes on the Turnpike in 2021–2025 were coded to East Brunswick 109 times, South Brunswick 54, Cranbury 42 and Monroe 26 (FMCSA crash file). Town coding on a limited-access highway is approximate.

Fatal crashes involving a large truck on this part of the Turnpike (2019–2024, NHTSA FARS; 2024 preliminary) include:

  • January 10, 2019, after dark, coded to New Brunswick: an angle collision between a flatbed straight truck and another vehicle. One person in the other vehicle died.
  • March 4, 2019, midday, Cranbury: a rear-end collision involving a straight truck and a tractor-trailer. A truck occupant died.
  • October 8, 2019, overnight in rain, coded to Milltown: a tractor pulling a cargo tank, flagged as carrying hazardous material, jackknifed and struck a guardrail. The truck's occupant died.
  • June 26, 2020, late evening, Cranbury: a rear-end collision with a tractor-trailer on an unlit section. One person in the other vehicle died.
  • August 23, 2024, before dawn, East Brunswick: a pedestrian was struck by a tractor-trailer on an unlit section and died.

The FMCSA file adds a fatal crash on April 24, 2025, in East Brunswick involving a box truck and a tractor-trailer hauling an intermodal container.

Across the whole Turnpike in Middlesex, 10 of the 638 reportable crashes in 2021–2025 were fatal and 227 involved an injury, with 317 people hurt (FMCSA crash file). Countywide, 28 of the 49 fatal large-truck crashes happened in the dark and 16 were front-to-rear collisions (2019–2024, NHTSA FARS).

Your report

NJSP crash-report portal, njportal.com/njsp/crashreports, under “New Jersey Turnpike.” Toll-road reports cost $5. Reports can take up to 14 business days to appear, and once released stay downloadable for 14 days. NJSP keeps crash reports for six years.

If someone died

The police report for a fatal Turnpike crash is released only through the New Jersey Turnpike Authority's OPRA request form. Photographs, statements and the reconstruction file are a separate $20 “Serious/Fatal” records request that requires a subpoena or court order.

Crashes on the ramps and local roads

A crash on NJ 32, CR 535 or NJ 18 just off the interchange is typically handled by South Brunswick, Monroe, Cranbury or East Brunswick police, not NJSP. See the Exit 8A roads page and the crash-report guide.

What's hard to do alone

  • Turnpike camera footage has no published request process. NJDOT's cameras require a request received within seven calendar days; the Turnpike Authority has published no rule at all. The safe course is an OPRA request plus a preservation letter to the NJTA right away.
  • The Turnpike Authority is a public authority. A claim about the road itself, such as a work zone or a disabled-vehicle response, carries a 90-day notice-of-claim deadline (N.J.S.A. 59:8-8).
  • The serious or fatal file needs legal process. Photos, statements and the reconstruction come only with a subpoena or court order, and the prosecutor controls the file while charges are pending.
  • The trucking company's clocks run regardless. Electronic logs have to be kept only six months (49 CFR 395.8).

“The sooner you contact us, the sooner we can preserve evidence, review driver logs, and protect your rights.”
