Truck Crashes on the NJ Turnpike, Exits 10 to 12

Between Exit 10 in Edison and Exit 12 in Carteret, the Turnpike meets I-287, Route 440, the Parkway and Route 9 within eight miles. The State Police handle the mainline; a crash on a ramp or the road you were joining may belong to a different agency.

Why trucks crowd Exits 10 and 11

Commercial vehicles over 10,000 lb are barred from the Garden State Parkway north of Interchange 105, which covers all of Middlesex County. The one nearby exception is the KT Ramp in Woodbridge, which lets trucks reach the Turnpike from northbound Route 9. Heavy traffic for the Parkway corridor uses the Turnpike, I-287 and Route 9 instead.

Lane rules

Between Interchanges 11 and 14, the left lanes of the outer roadways are HOV lanes at weekday peaks and otherwise closed to commercial vehicles. Trucks over 10,000 lb are also barred from the far-left lane of three-lane sections and from lanes marked “Cars Only.”

NJDOT high-crash corridor

The 3.4-mile “I-95 Middlesex/Union” segment is on NJDOT's statewide list of 20 high-crash truck corridors: 256 crashes, 134 of them involving trucks, with 1 killed and 74 injured.

Service areas

Thomas Edison Service Area (southbound, 43 truck spaces) and Grover Cleveland Service Area (northbound, 50 truck spaces), both in Woodbridge. Their ramps are frequent crash reference points.

Recent crashes on this stretch

Crashes are described by date, road, town and vehicle type only. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

Fatal crashes recorded by FMCSA on the Turnpike at the north end of the county: February 18, 2025 (Woodbridge), July 20, 2025 (Edison), October 22, 2025 (Edison) and June 25, 2026 (Carteret) (FMCSA crash file; 2026 is incomplete).

Fatal crashes involving a large truck, 2019–2024 (NHTSA FARS; 2024 preliminary):

  • September 8, 2019, early evening, Carteret: a tractor-trailer struck a concrete traffic barrier. The truck's occupant died.
  • October 26, 2019, overnight, Edison: a pedestrian was struck in a same-direction sideswipe involving a straight truck on an unlit section and died.
  • December 12, 2022, midday, Edison, on a Turnpike ramp: a rear-end collision involving a flatbed tractor-trailer. One person in the other vehicle died.
  • March 27, 2023, 2:42 a.m., Edison: a rear-end collision with a tractor-trailer in a construction zone on an unlit section. One person in the other vehicle died.

Two other crashes on this stretch have their own pages. On August 9, 2022, a double-decker intercity bus overturned near the Thomas Edison Service Area ramp after colliding with a pickup, killing two people; see bus and motorcoach crashes. On a Monday, March 9, near the Grover Cleveland Service Area, a dump truck struck two tractor-trailers stopped on the shoulder and its driver was killed; an FMCSA record dated March 9, 2026 (Woodbridge, NJSP, one killed) appears to match, but the year is unconfirmed.

Who patrols it and where the report comes from

Turnpike mainline and Turnpike ramps

New Jersey State Police, Troop D. NJSP has not published whether the Cranbury Station or the Newark Station (14 Port Street, Newark, (973) 344-1099) covers Exits 10–12. Report: NJSP portal, njportal.com/njsp/crashreports, “New Jersey Turnpike,” $5. Up to 14 business days; fatal crash reports only by NJTA OPRA form.

NJSP Troop D; NJSP/NJTA crash report portal

I-287 at Exit 10

Also State Police, but a different troop (Troop B) and a different portal category: “Non-Toll,” $13. In 2021–2025 NJSP filed 154 of the 161 reportable truck crashes on I-287 in Middlesex. See I-287.

NJSP Troop B; FMCSA crash file

Route 440 at Exit 10

FMCSA crash file, 2021–2025

Route 9 at Exit 11

Town police only. NJSP filed none of the 339 reportable truck crashes on Route 9; Woodbridge, Sayreville and Old Bridge police did. See Route 9.

What's hard to do alone

  • Three agencies within a mile. A crash on the Exit 10 ramp system can be Troop D (Turnpike), Troop B (I-287) or NJSP on Route 440, each with a different portal category and fee. The location written on the report decides where you request it, and a wrong guess costs weeks.
  • Camera and dispatch records. NJDOT cameras on I-287 and Route 440 require a request received within seven calendar days. The Turnpike Authority has no published camera rule, so an OPRA request and preservation letter go out immediately.
  • Shoulder and service-area crashes. The carrier's dispatch, breakdown and maintenance records matter, and they are kept on the carrier's schedule: maintenance records one year, electronic logs six months.
  • Public-entity notice. Claims involving the Turnpike Authority carry a 90-day notice deadline (N.J.S.A. 59:8-8).

“We prepare for trial from the start, which creates leverage with trucking companies and their insurers.”

  • Files the 90-day public-entity notice if the Turnpike Authority is a party
