"After a truck crash, you may be dealing with hospital visits, missed work, insurance calls, and uncertainty about what comes next." Middlesex sees more of these crashes than any of the other counties we serve: 49 fatal crashes involving a large truck and 54 people killed from 2019 to 2024 (NHTSA FARS), about 12% of New Jersey's 418 such crashes. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

Middlesex County's truck story in numbers

Federal data counts two kinds of truck crash here. The first is the fatal crash: 49 of them involving a large truck between 2019 and 2024, with 54 people killed (NHTSA FARS; the 2024 file is preliminary). The second is the much larger set of crashes that states must report to the federal government because someone died, someone was taken for treatment, or a vehicle had to be towed: 3,724 truck and bus crashes in Middlesex from 2021 through 2025, including 47 fatal crashes and 1,477 injury crashes, with 2,052 people hurt (FMCSA crash file). Another 519 were logged in 2026 through mid-September, a figure that will grow as reports catch up.

The roads tell the rest. The Turnpike has the most reportable truck crashes, 638 (2021–2025, FMCSA). US 1 has the most deaths, 12 people in 8 fatal crashes (2019–2024, FARS). US 9 is the only Middlesex road with a fatal truck crash in every year from 2019 to 2024 (FARS). And 28 of the county's 49 fatal truck crashes happened in the dark (2019–2024, FARS).

Why so many trucks? The Turnpike segment from NJ 18 to NJ 440 carries the most freight on the whole I-95/Turnpike corridor: 119 million tons worth $182 billion (NJDOT 2023 Statewide Freight Plan, 2019-era data). Around Exit 8A, 15 warehouse site plans approved, pending or planned in 2020–2022 added more than 8 million square feet of freight-generating floor space (Southern Middlesex County Freight Movement Study, NJTPA, 2023). Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash. The full tables, by year, road and town, are on the Middlesex truck crash map and data page.

What's hard to do alone

  • Traffic-camera video has a 7-day clock. A request for NJDOT camera video must be received by the Department within seven calendar days of the crash, and costs $100 per camera for the first three hours (N.J.A.C. 16:1A-4.6). Most people are still in the hospital on day seven.
  • The truck's logs only have to be kept for 6 months. Federal rules let a carrier discard hours-of-service records and supporting documents after six months (49 CFR 395.8(k)). A preservation letter has to arrive before then.
  • A fatal Turnpike crash report is not on the portal. It comes only through a New Jersey Turnpike Authority OPRA request, and the State Police investigation file (photos, statements, reconstruction) requires a subpoena or court order.

Each of these has its own form, fee and custodian. See evidence deadlines, how to get your crash report and who investigates a truck crash in Middlesex.
