The road and its trucks

NJDOT high-crash corridor

A 4.2-mile “US 9, Middlesex” segment is on NJDOT's statewide list of 20 high-crash truck corridors: 657 crashes, 132 involving trucks, 145 people injured.

NJDOT 2023 Statewide Freight Plan, 2019 data

Why trucks are on Route 9

Commercial vehicles over 10,000 lb are barred from the Garden State Parkway north of Interchange 105, so trucks headed the Parkway's way use Route 9 instead. The one exception is the KT Ramp in Woodbridge, which lets trucks reach the Turnpike from northbound Route 9.

Recent crashes on Route 9

Crashes are described by date, road, town and vehicle type only. Charges are charges, not findings. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

  • May 21, 2025, Route 9 northbound on the Edison Bridge, Sayreville: a truck driver repairing his disabled tractor-trailer on the shoulder was struck and killed by a driver passing on the shoulder. That driver was charged with strict-liability vehicular homicide; the Prosecutor's Office said he was impaired. The disposition of the charge has not been checked. FMCSA records the same crash on May 21, 2025.
  • September 21, 2023, before dawn, Route 9 south, Parlin (Sayreville): a dump truck left the road and struck a pickup turning into a gas station, killing the pickup's driver. See

  • February 11, 2023, Route 9 near Frederick Place, Sayreville: a fuel-tanker collision closed Route 9 in both directions; County Hazmat transferred the fuel. See

What's hard to do alone

  • Two of the three report methods are unconfirmed. Woodbridge publishes its procedure. Sayreville and Old Bridge, which together filed 183 of the 339 Route 9 truck reports, do not, so getting the report means a phone call and a records-window visit, not a download.
  • Truck drivers are victims here too. Of the 54 people killed in Middlesex large-truck crashes in 2019–2024, 8 were truck occupants, including the driver killed on the Edison Bridge shoulder. A driver's claim can involve both the at-fault motorist and the driver's own employer's coverage.
  • Shoulder crashes turn on records. Why the truck was stopped and whether warning triangles were out are answered by the carrier's dispatch and breakdown records and by police photographs, which are released only after the case closes.
  • The criminal case controls the file. When a driver is charged, the prosecutor holds the investigation through discovery.

“Whether you are focusing on healing, dealing with lost wages, or adjusting to an entirely new way of life for yourself and your family, fighting with insurance companies to get the compensation you deserve may not be your top priority.”
