Garces, Grabler & LeBrocq, P.C. handles those steps from offices in Edison, New Brunswick and Perth Amboy. The Perth Amboy office is at 502 Amboy Avenue, on the corridor the county studied as a cut-through to the bridge.

Freight role

NJDOT says the Middlesex segment “carries substantial truck volumes destined for points east of the Hudson River via Staten Island.” Tonnage peaks on the segment entering the Outerbridge, at 43 million tons. Parts of Route 440 are on the National Network for 102-inch-wide trucks and doubles.

Amboy Avenue (CR 653)

The county's 2025 road safety audit found Amboy Avenue in Perth Amboy “is also used as a cut-through route for traffic destined for the Outerbridge Crossing when NJ 440 becomes congested,” and studied the Amboy Avenue / Route 440 off-ramp as a conflict point.

Recent crashes on Route 440

Crashes are described by date, road, town and vehicle type only. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

  • July 18, 2026, Route 440, Woodbridge: a fatal crash involving a dump truck, reported by the State Police (FMCSA crash file; 2026 data is incomplete).
  • July 26, 2021, dawn, Edison: a rear-end collision involving a tractor pulling a dump trailer and two other vehicles. One person in another vehicle died (NHTSA FARS).
  • October 13, 2020, late afternoon, on a Route 440 ramp in Edison: a head-on collision involving two tractor-trailers and a third vehicle. One person in the other vehicle died (NHTSA FARS).

Across 2021–2025, 2 of the 72 reportable truck and bus crashes on Route 440 were fatal and 32 involved an injury, with 43 people hurt (FMCSA crash file). Both fatal large-truck crashes in the 2019–2024 federal file were at the Edison end, where Route 440 meets the Turnpike and I-287, not at the bridge.

Seriously injured patients may be treated first at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy, which is “just off NJ-440” but is not a designated trauma center, and then moved to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, the county's only state-designated trauma center (Level I, NJ Department of Health list dated June 6, 2024). Records requests follow the patient.

What's hard to do alone

  • Three agencies within a mile. The State Police, the Port Authority Police and the Perth Amboy or Woodbridge police each keep their own reports, on different systems, at $13, $17 and a per-page fee. The officer's card or the report number tells you which one, and the wrong request costs weeks.
  • An over-height or over-width truck raises routing and permit questions. With a 14-foot height limit and an 8-foot-6 width limit at the bridge, a truck that did not fit either had an NJDOT permit with a specified route or did not. Those records have to be requested.
  • The Port Authority is a public entity. Any claim involving the bridge authority carries a 90-day notice-of-claim deadline (N.J.S.A. 59:8-8), with damage limits and no punitive damages.
  • State-highway cameras. Route 440 is an NJDOT road; camera video must be requested electronically and received within seven calendar days.
