Why the date matters more than the day you call

Two of the shortest evidence windows start at the crash, not when you pick up the phone.

  • 7 calendar days: a request for NJDOT traffic-camera video must be received by the Department within seven calendar days of the crash (N.J.A.C. 16:1A-4.6).
  • 6 months: the trucking company only has to keep its drivers' hours-of-service logs and supporting documents for six months (49 CFR 395.8(k)).
