Truck Crashes on the Industrial Streets of Woodbridge and Carteret

Not every truck crash happens on a highway. In Port Reading, Avenel, Raritan Center and Carteret, a crash at a yard gate or warehouse driveway is still a truck case, and the report comes from Woodbridge or Carteret police, not the State Police.

This page covers what generates the truck traffic here, what the crash data shows street by street, which department has your report, and what has to happen in the first weeks. Garces, Grabler & LeBrocq, P.C. handles those steps from offices in Edison, New Brunswick and Perth Amboy.

The streets and their trucks

Raritan Center (Edison and Woodbridge)

About 2,350 acres on the former Raritan Arsenal. NJDOT's freight plan describes it as home to major freight-generating and transporting companies, with good rail access and a 2,000-foot wharf in “extremely poor repair.” NJDOT awarded Woodbridge Township $7,609,062 for a rail freight facility there.

Rail and the Turnpike

The Turnpike crosses Conrail's Port Reading Secondary and runs beside the Chemical Coast Secondary into Carteret at Exit 12.

Energy plants

The freight plan lists the PSEG Sewaren and Woodbridge Energy Center (Keasbey) generating plants among the area's freight nodes.

Recent crashes on these streets

Crashes are described by date, road, town and vehicle type only. Involving a truck does not mean the truck caused the crash.

  • September 2, 2026, Homestead Avenue, Woodbridge (Avenel): a car went under a delivery box truck. Woodbridge firefighters extricated the driver after a prolonged effort. The truck's ruptured saddle tank leaked diesel, bringing Middlesex County Hazmat. This is an underride crash, the kind the truck's rear and side guards are meant to prevent.
  • December 9, 2025, Peter J. Sica Industrial Highway, Carteret: a fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer, reported by Carteret Police (FMCSA crash file).
  • September 8, 2019, early evening, Turnpike, Carteret: a tractor-trailer struck a concrete barrier and its occupant died (NHTSA FARS). Turnpike crashes in Carteret are covered on
    the Exits 10–12 page
    .

Of Carteret's 119 reportable truck and bus crashes in 2021–2025, 1 was fatal and 54 people were injured. Woodbridge Township recorded 580 reportable crashes in the same period, 9 of them fatal, with 371 people injured; most were on Route 1, Route 9, Route 440 and the Turnpike rather than the side streets (FMCSA crash file, town names merged).

A fatal dump-truck crash coded to Port Reading Avenue in September 2023 appears in the FMCSA file but has no match in the federal fatal-crash file, so it is not listed here.

What to check in the report

Boxes 50–52 record the responsible carrier and USDOT number, which on a parcel or contract truck is often not the brand on the side. Box 114 gives the cargo body type. A wrong carrier can be fixed with a change report.

NJTR-1 Crash Report Manual, 2017

What's hard to do alone

  • Yard gates and loading areas add a party. A crash where a truck is entering or leaving a facility can involve the facility operator, which controls the gate, the yard and the cameras, as well as the carrier. Neither has a duty to keep records for you without a preservation letter.
  • Underride evidence disappears at the body shop. Whether a box truck's rear and side guards met the standard, and whether they were damaged or missing before the crash, can only be checked before the truck is repaired or scrapped.
  • The brand on the truck is not the defendant. Parcel and delivery routes are often run by contractors in leased or rented trucks. The NJTR-1 carrier boxes, the lease and the dispatch records identify who is responsible, and leased equipment carries its own federal rules (49 CFR 376.12).
  • The carrier's clocks. Electronic logs are kept six months; driver vehicle inspection reports three months.

“When you hire us as your legal team, we will investigate every aspect of the accident to determine liability and ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable.”
